Posted by: Neil Hillyard Most motorcycle accidents are not the fault of the motorcycle rider. Many motorcycle accident injuries are caused by the operator of a car or truck failing to look carefully and failing to see the motorcycle and rider. As motorcycle riders, we need to do everything we can to make ourselves visible and noticeable to other traffic. For instance, most all motorcycles today have full time headlights. Personally I ride both a Harley Davidson and a BMW motorcycle. I feel safer when riding the Harley Davidson because of the noise generated by the Harley. Many people find the loud exhaust of the Harley irritating but that fact also indicates they are noticing the bike and the rider and are therefore aware of their presence. My son and I took the motorcycle safety course years ago before obtaining our license. It not only made me a better motorcycle rider, it made me a better automobile driver. Now, even when driving my car, I find myself doing a headcheck when changing lanes. When riding my motorcycle, I constantly am on alert that other vehicles may not be aware of me and I drive defensively as a result of this. Clearly the motorcycle is not as safe as the automobile. After all, it only has two wheels. Motorcycle injuries are often more severe since we riders don't have the protection surrounding us we have in our automobile. While Colorado law does not require a motorcycle helmet to be worn, it seems to me that we should take advantage of every means of protection available. I will not ride without my helmet, even my Harley! We have a section regarding motorcycle accidents and motorcycle injuries on our website, www.hwkslaw.com. The fact is that most people who don't ride a motorcycle make an assumption that any accident involving a motorcycle is the fault of the motorcycle rider. Being a motorcycle rider, I know differently and enjoy proving that this simply isn't true. |
